Dear Dr. Hall:
Professor H. H. Schloessin is being considered for promotion from the rank of Associate Professor to that of Full Professor. A recommendation is made after considering his contributions in teaching, administration, community service and research. The first three areas can only be judged reasonably by internal referees but in the area of research we rely heavily on how the candidate appears to his peers outside the university.
Your name has been submitted as a person qualified to act as a referee in the area of the candidate's research contributions and I would be most grateful if you would agree to undertake this task. A list of the candidate's publications to date, together with some reprints of his more recent work, and a set of guide lines is enclosed to assist you if you agree to act as referee.
